every steppix challenge works the same way. here's the whole thing, including the parts most apps put in the fine print.
step 1
join a challenge.
pick a challenge: a daily step goal, a number of days, and an entry ($10, $20, $30, $40, $50 and $60). official challenges are run by steppix. friends can run their own, public or private.
at checkout you pay the entry plus a service fee of 10% + $0.30. the entry goes into the prize pool. the fee is how steppix runs the service; it's added on top and never comes out of the pool.
joins close when the challenge starts (midnight eastern time on its first day). if it doesn't have enough players by then (10 for official challenges, 5 for community ones, 2 for private ones), it's cancelled and everyone gets a full refund, service fee included.

step 2
hit your goal every day.
your steps come straight from apple health, from your own iphone and apple watch. each challenge day runs from midnight to midnight in your own time zone, the one you joined from, wherever you walk.
steps count once they sync from apple health. each day stays open until 10:00 a.m. the next morning, so a walk from last night still counts if it syncs by then. only steps you walked on that day count toward it. opening steppix once a day keeps you safe.
after that, the day closes and it's final. miss your goal on any day and you're out of that challenge.
early-bird challenges only count steps inside a time window, like 6–9 AM. survival challenges eliminate people daily, and duels are one on one.

step 3
finishers split the pool.
when the last day closes, everyone who hit their goal every day is a finisher. each finisher gets their own entry back plus an equal share of the entries left behind by people who missed a day. steppix takes nothing out of the pool: the whole pool goes to finishers.
winnings land in your steppix wallet. cash out any time your balance is at least $25, after a one-time identity check.

a worked example.
100 people join a $20 challenge. 70 finish, 30 miss a day. these numbers are computed live from the same fee settings the app uses.
each player paid $22.30 at checkout ($20.00 entry + $2.30 service fee). the fee isn't part of the pool.

everyone finishes
nobody forfeited anything, so everyone simply gets their entry back.
nobody finishes
everyone gets their entry back in full. the only exception: players disqualified for cheating get nothing back.
entry credit
credit (like the $5 welcome credit) pays for entries. if you win, the credit part comes back as credit and the winnings are cash.
fair play
everyone plays by the same rules.
- steps are read from apple health, and only from apple’s own step counting on your iphone or apple watch
- hand-entered steps and steps from third-party apps are ignored
- your iphone’s motion data and walking distance are used to cross-check steps
- unusual patterns (a phone on a shaker, 3 AM step bursts, late backfills) are flagged for a human to review, and those winnings are held until it’s cleared

- hit the daily goal every day. everyone who finishes splits the pool.
- survival
- miss a day and you're out. daily eliminations; the last ones walking split it.
- duels
- two people, one goal. whoever keeps hitting it walks off with it.
- early birds (time windows)
- only steps between set times count, like 6–9 AM in your time zone. sleep in and they don’t.
- private challenges
- invite-only with a link. same rules, same protections, just your people.
- free challenges & drops
- no entry at all. drops are free to enter, with a prize paid by steppix.
